Stenciling is a fabulous technique to use to add pattern to almost any paintable surface. Stencils can be used in small areas to add subtle detail or larger stencils can be employed to apply pattern over whole walls (much like wallpaper).

What to do

  • Prepare surface by using sugar soap to ensure the area is clean.
  • If stenciling over a large area, map out where each stencil is to be placed and mark with a pencil.
  • Place the stencil in its first position and fix it to the surface with masking tape.
  • Dip the tips of the brush into the paint and immediately dab it on the flat part of the paint tray or on a piece of clean board.
  • Begin to stipple the paint over the stencil. This is almost a tapping motion rather than a side to side or up and down motion. Build up the colour slowly rather than applying the paint too thickly.
  • Once the cut-out area has been covered uniformly, gently lift the stencil and move on to the next area and repeat the process. If any paint has bled under the stencil then try to neaten it while still wet and clean off the back of the stencil.
